About Afghanistan

Families in Afghanistan struggle under the weight of poverty following decades of turmoil, war and oppression. The people are laboring to rebuild their communities without even basic necessities of life like housing, food, and clean water.

In addition to the pressures of life after war, rural women in Afghanistan also face stringent social and mobility restrictions confining them to their homes or family compounds to work. Women face obstacles to earning a livelihood in a harsh environment.

MEDA Trust is helping by offering women a means to participate in earning a livelihood and contribute to household earnings. Your support is helping to restore human dignity and provide hope for these women; hope for a better future – not only for themselves, but for their families and their communities.

We take extreme care to protect the identities of the women we work with given the sensitive social and political climate of Afghanistan. As a result, we use only their first names when speaking about the women and the loans.

"Our reception has been overwhelmingly positive. Everyone I've met has been welcoming, appreciative and full of hope. The Afghan people are proud, with strength of spirit, pride and determination."
